The English Tea, organized by the Sara R. Haworth Mission Circle, is a Springfield institution. Every other year, over 100 women gather for a lavish English-style tea, with scones, jams, trifle and cucumber sandwiches. The Tea is in memory of Thelma Jarvis (1932-2014), who brought much refined grace to our meeting. Thelma is remembered for her “Scarlett O’Hara” dress, her beautiful place settings, and her vast knowledge of the proper way to serve tea.
The Tea will be held this year on May 20, 2023 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Everyone dresses in their best (fancy hats are always welcome!) It’s a time to have fun, dress up and get in touch with your inner Downton Abbey or Jane Austen self.
It’s a fun and exciting opportunity for hostesses to get out their best china and rev up decorating skills. Each table holds 10 people, so think of family, friends and neighbors to invite. Tickets to the Tea are $10 each.
Men are also recruited to serve as waiters for the tea. Waiters will need to wear black trousers and white shirts – black bow ties will be provided.
This year we are adding a special room at the Tea for young children, with a fairy theme, costumes, lemonade and cookies.
